What's going on ya'll...

I want to extend a special thanks to all of the people who have been supporting the music I've been putting out over the past few years. As an artist, there is no better motivation to keep producing, than to know that there are people who appreciate what you're doing and are anxiously anticipating your next move.

Well, that next move is here! While I'm feverishly putting the finishing touches on my Into the See album (March 26, 2012), digest this mixtape that the homie DJ Trizzak (SwoonUnit) put together. It features some of my most memorable collabs and features from over the years, as well as some unreleased and remixed joints. And stay tuned for many more releases from me and my Alpha Male Society (AMSOC) team in 2012!

My impatience almost got the best of me with this one, y'all. When the homie Triz (DJ Trizzak) hit me with the scenario that meeting our 1.2.12 release date for Looking Backpack would mean half-stepping, I was tempted to suggest we limp to the finish line. Then I remembered a similar situation with the Wakeup Call mixtape we put out together back in 2007, and how dope the finished product turned out when I waited those few extra days the homie asked for.

So we wait. In the meantime, check the artwork and spread the word about what's coming.

I read this blog entry by Derek Sivers (of CDBABY fame) this morning, and I thought you guys might find it interesting. I certainly did.

"96% of cancer patients in a hospital claim to be in better health than the average cancer patient.

93% of motorists consider themselves to be safer-than-average drivers.

90% students see themselves as more intelligent than the average student.

94% of college professors said they are better-than-average teachers.

Ironically, 92% said they are less biased than average, too.

The psychology term for this is illusory superiority.

To me, this was like finding out I'm a cylon, or this is the Matrix. Hard to accept facts.

At first, like almost everybody, I thought, “Yes, but I really am above average!” Then I realized I was doing it again.

So I decided to gamble on the opposite:

I now just assume I'm below average.

It serves me well.

I listen more. I ask a lot of questions.

I've stopped thinking others are stupid. I assume most people are smarter than me.

To assume you're below average is to admit you're a beginner. It puts you in student mind. It keeps your focus on present practice and future possibilities, and away from any past accomplishments.

So, I wake up the morning (pretty hungover from the bday bash I attended last night), check the missed texts on my phone, and BAM!!! The "Pick 3" number that I've been playing for the past several days (actually, it's the only number I EVER play, but I only play it when I get the urge to lol) came out in the evening drawing. You know, the one I DIDN'T play last night.

Anyway, on my way to work this morning, the NaS quote I used to title this blog popped into my head. While I didn't buy a bottle with the buck that could have quite literally struck the lotto last night, the sentiment remains true. You gotta be IN it to WIN it.

I relearned a lesson this morning about listening to my gut and sticking to what I KNOW I should do until it's DONE.

RIP Teddy Pendergrass

Aight, I won't front like I lost one of my biggest musical influences last night. I can't name a single Teddy Pendergrass album, and can hum the tune to only a few of what are probably his MOST popular songs, which by nature, I guess, makes me a casual fan.

What I will say is that the occasions on which I did get the opportunity to hear Mr. Pendergrass leave me wondering why the hell I didn't do more digging before he passed. I'm hoping the homie MIDIMarc is hard at work RIGHT NOW on a tribute project (I think I'll post that on twitter while I'm thinking about it) for the late, great Teddy Pendergrass.

In all the music I've recorded over the past several years, I've only spit over one Teddy Pendergrass sample. Well, I didn't really spit over that one either. It was a DJ Forge remix of "Sit Tight", a 208 Dragons song from our Burning Bush (2003) album. It's only fitting, with the passing of a musical great (I'm reviewing the catalogue as we speak!), that I pay homage with a revisit. So here it is:

What's going on ya'll?

Hopefully, you're enjoying your 2010 experience so far. I intend to have a very productive year, but to keep with my main resolution, I won't spend much time at all talking about what's to come until I've rounded the last corner of it's completion.

With that said, I'm picking up steam on the process for my next album, and as usual, I'm preparing by listening to my entire solo catalogue. I'm excited to say that, for the first time, Mrs. Archer is participating in the process. Stay tuned after the jump to find out her favorite joints from each of my projects!

Customer Service from my first solo album, Catharsis (out of print), wins by default because of the Anita Baker sample chosen by Mani (J. Manifest Wiggins). I definitely dig this joint myself so I can respect her decision lol.

A Day That Ends In Y marks the beginning of my working relationship with Def Dave and D-Lamma (The Loop-ings). Mrs. Archer had no trouble picking Development as the favorite on this joint, and again, I can respect her decision.

Shouts to DJ Trizzak for bringing the wicky-wicky to the only official mixtape from Diablo Archer to this point. Now is where the debates begin between Ms. Archer and myself, but since this particular blog is about her favorites, Check the Rhyme '07 gets the nod for Wakeup Call.

And so the debate rolls over to Icarus Complex, which is the first intallment of my ICARUS series. One time for the homeboy MIDIMarc from Angry Chimp Music Group for his production on Mrs. Archer's choice, Walkin On feat. Rushmoore.

We both have a LOT of favorites on LIFT! There wasn't a lot of disagreement over which songs are the dopest, but we each spent a good bit of time narrowing down our lists to one joint. While we didn't agree in the end, I can't front on her decision. Shouts to the homie Antone da Kid for his production on Autumn (The Fall).

I'm hoping ya'll can appreciate the joints the mrs chose during today's listening session. I definitely gained a lot of insight as well as inspiration for the album in the works right now. New music on the way!!!

If you were a reality TV character (ie your life somehow became televised), and you could basically watch your own life from an outside perspective, what do you think your opinion of that character would be? What's good ya'll...

So, I was in DC looking for possible video locations (trip got TOTALLY rained out), and I damn near lost my camera to a language barrier and a nonchalant head of security.

After a really rough night. Scratch that. After a really jacked up weekend in DC, which ended about 5am prior to a 9:30am departure, I left my handheld camera in the hotel room. Yep! I was close to King's Dominion before I realized it, but I was sure of it. We pulled over, checked the luggage, and proceeded to call the hotel...

I explain my situation to the head of security, who proceeds to tell me, "No sir. We don't have it." Now, by this point, I'm POSITIVE I took it into the room just a few hours before. I'm also pretty skeptical about housekeeping having gotten to my room on the 27TH FLOOR less than 3 hours after I checked out. So I tell the dude thank you and hung up.

Of course I call right back, but this time I ask to speak to Julie at the front desk. Julie is the absolute shit at her job, and probably the ONLY reason I would ever stay at the Hilton in Alexandria, VA again after homeboy tried to play me for my camera. Anyway, Julie explains that the camera would have gone through housekeeping before going to security, and that was IF they had gotten to the room yet.

I speak with housekeeping, explain to her like 3 times what happened, have her go up and check the room while I wait to call back in about 15 minutes. She tells me the camera is there (THANKS KHAM!!!), I proceed to tell her like 3 times lol the name of my associate who would be picking up the camera, and she tells me that he should have no problem picking it up from.... DUN DUN DUNNNNNN... Security

My associate arrives, and of course, Mr. Head of Security pulls that, "No Sir. We don't have it." shit again. Associate number 2 is about ready to whip the truck around and head back at this point, but Mrs. Archer would have probably killed us all at that point. We keep moving, associate number 1 goes professionally aggressive (if you don't know what I'm talking about, step your executive game up lol) on Mr. Head of freakin Security, and retrieves my beloved handheld.

So... No video locations in DC. I just don't think the signs pointed to the district on this trip lol. Next stop, ATL

1. Name one song that truly moves you (besides your own)?

Drake-'Say What's Real' and Rick Ross-'Valley of Death' are two joints that really move me right now. I actually have a Sansa Clip full of songs that get me through my day. They all move me, but, right now, those two are on repeat when they come on.

2. What is the dopest line you’ve written?

I could never answer that question definitively lol, so I'll give you my most memorable line at this moment. 'my memories are sour trees blowing in the wind, so I quit and repent, but I seal it with a twist and forget. Put fire out, been smoking ever since. They say I spew it Hell hot when I am only trying to vent.' Okay, that was more than a line. I got a bit carried away.

3. What is the best musical sample you’ve used or heard used in a song?

I'm a sucker for Luther (Vandross) samples. Ninth Wonder's remix of Jay-Z's "Threats" is one of my favorite sample flips. haha, you KNOW questions are good when you argue with yourself over the answers. This was supposed to be a QUICK interview lmao.

4. Who do you plan to collaborate musically with in the future?

If I could do a joint with Andre 3000 under the condition that it was my last collab EVER, I think I'd take the deal. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'd take it. Yep. Haha upon re-reading, I'm POSITIVE I'd at LEAST sleep on it. Seriously though, dude is a ridiculous talent.

5. Who or what has influenced you the most?

I've been influenced by hip hop. I mean, that relationship has been the most dynamic one I can remember. As far as how my music has been influenced... Pretty much everything I grew up listening to, and anything I listen to or see now. That can be anything from an old Donny Hathaway song to a conversation with a coworker. My music is heavily influenced by everyday life. I try to capture snapshots as I'm going about my day, and then use those snapshots to paint portraits that offer my take on what I've seen. Then I'm influenced by feedback, even though most artists hate to admit it.

A few of my close associates have been telling me lately how I don't blog enough. I mean, I have all these spectacular blog topics throughout the day pretty much everyday, but by the time I'm in front of my computer with a free second, my brain is usually on to the next hustle. Anyway, since I'm about to release acts 2 and 3 from the Icarus Series (acts 2 and 3 make up LIFT: The Rise and Fall of Diablo Archer, but that's for a later blog), I think it's time I revisit Icarus Complex. This isn't the "what I was feeling when I recorded this joint" rundown or whatever. I tried that one before, and it didn't work out too well lol. THIS is how I'm feeling RIGHT NOW listening to the song for the first time in a couple months.

Here goes...

D-Lamma did his thing on the beat. WHY this dude is not making beats right now is such a mystery to me! Dasan's voice is PERFECT for this track. That "I remember Icarus" line still gets me every time. It's crazy how he had no IDEA about the whole "Icarus" theme in this project.

This conversation, with the chic, didn't really happen, but very easily COULD have. I don't usually do that (make up stories about conversations), but the dream it happened in was so vivid that I felt it was appropriate. Again, Dasan's intro and hook confirmed my vision for the joint.

I'm thinking about all of those "IAMNOTAFRAID" pics I received. I wish I could have used all of them. I'm still amazed that I can reach out to people all over the world, LITERALLY, and find support.

I think that not recognizing something as an addiction when you've entered into a new cellphone contract just to be able to keep up with it (by the way, if you knew my old number, I've got a new one so hit me for that) is a freakin travesty. So...

Here I am admitting that I have a new addiction. TWITTER(www.twitter.com/diabloarcher)!!! The saddest part is, after a couple months of just tweeting away, I'm still not quite sure I have a firm grasp on what the hell it is I'm doing!

I mean, I've been having feelings ranging from Rockwell (I always feel like...lol) to Truman Show to "It's a small world aaaafterall...", but NOTHING has made me stop tweeting...and about absolutely NOTHING. Do people just strike up conversation like this in real life... am I THAT anti...I guess I should say "was I", because I've noticed a change in myself lately.

Since Twitter, I've become quite the social butterfly. I'm randomly chatting with people in stores and restaraunts and isht. Weather, Obama, the economic stimulus package, a blog report about the peanut butter an old man had in the grocery line, A-Fraud, etc...

So if you get a random tweet from me (or you have an explanation for what it is I'm REALLY supposed to be using Twitter for), respond. I'm just fueling my addiction for random conversation, sponsered by Twitter, the newest netcrack on the market.

Theme Music the Weekend...

I woke up early this morning feeling recovered from my first week of 12hr shifts in Clark Kentsville. I haven't hit the studio in over a week, and LIFT is due to reach ya'll at the end of the month. I've got ridiculous beats from some producers that ya'll NEED to hear, but I'll speak more on them when I post the LIFT tracklisting later this month.

Right now, I'm heading into the booth to whet my chops a bit before making the final push on LIFT. That is, right after I break the morning repeat of the I Put On Remix (Jeezy, Ye, HOV)

In fact, that beat might be the perfect warmup track for the morning. Maybe I'll be back with an exclusive later...

First off, I appreciate anyone actually taking the time to see what's going on over here. I've heard that blogging is therapeutic, so I figured I'd see what all the "type" is about.
